As long as he isn't like, bleeding it's probably okay...When I was in college my parents ignored the fact that my parakeet was in distress, and when he started bleeding from digging at his tail they decided to wait for me to come home for the summer instead of taking him to the vet. By the time I got home he had this huge...scab on his behind. :/ I took him to the vet and he turned out to have an ingrown tailfeather that had caused him so much discomfort he tried to chew it out. He didn't make it through the summer, I think he was weakened by the ordeal.

So if your bird DOES start bleeding take him to the vet! ;)
