I leave my macaws' cage doors open all day, every day. THey generally stay on their cages the entire time, with only a few escapes from Oliver, who likes to wander about the hallway.
If yours has to be kept in his cage for the entire time you're at school, make sure you fill up the cage with plenty of toys to keep him occupied while you're gone. Right when you get home, open up the cage to let him stretch/flap his wings, etc. From here, just give him as much attention as you can. :)
