If you want a smaller bird that is not going to destroy the furniture and is easier to care for then an African Grey is not a good choice. Why don't you get something like a cockatiel or parrotlet. Or better yet, read about the different types of birds in the forums on here and see if there is a smaller bird that catches your interest. There are many, many different types of birds that make great pets.
