I've been looking for a space heater as well and from what I've read the oil filled radiator type is the best to get. They stay warmer longer as well so they are supposed to be the most energy efficent to run. I have contacted DeLonghi and Honeywell (those are the 2 readily available brands by me) and they do not use any teflon or PTFE in them and they are pretty reasonably priced, around $40-$65. I'm still going to run mine far away from the birds until it gets that new smell off though.
