They stay warmer longer as well so they are supposed to be the most energy efficent to run. I'm still going to run mine far away from the birds until it gets that new smell off though.

Another thing about the oil filled radiator type heaters is that they're relatively cool to the touch - i'd say a max of about 150°F so you don't have to worry about burns with children, feathered or unfeathered. I've actually stuck my feet in between the fins of one to warm them up
