When a feather is growing in there is blood in the shaft of it - if broken or cut, it will bleed. If that happens, you should pack it with cornstarch to stop the bleeding. In extreme cases you might have to pull it out with forceps (but cornstarch should be tried first).
Have an experienced person show you how to clip his wings correctly - they'll be able to show you what a blood feather looks like. You'll be able to see the blood in the shaft of the feather.
