I live with three birds and three cats. One of the cats has to be locked up during birdie playtime, but the other two have lived in peaceful harmony for the past two years. You have to know your animals, and understand that there is always a risk. My roommate's cats are afraid of the birds, and have never shown the slightest interest in them, even when the birds fly past them (or in some cases, try to land on them).
I understand that it's a risk, and most cats could NOT be allowed to be out with the birds like this, but every person has to make the decision for themselves and their personal animals. Just my opinion.
