Eclectus are wonderful birds. I love my guy. The most experience I have had has been with him (a red sided) and a female solomon island. Each bird is different. Echo is an absolute sweetheart but I know someone else with a male red sided eclectus that she can barely handle. She's had to get stitches more than once.
I think if your family and this bird get along, then you should be fine. Go meet him; see what he thinks of you. If he is receptive of you, then that's what matters.
I've never met a male eclectus that I didn't get along with. They tend to respond well to me. I think they know I'm a sucker for them. Getting a baby is no guarantee that s/he will be perfect either.
A lot of people say that the solomon island males make the best companions but most people say that the red sided males are very similar. I've only met a couple vos marie (sp) males but they seemed sweet too.
If a male of any subspecies showed up at my door one day, I'd be thrilled. I think they are great. I'm rather biased though.
Good luck!
