...I'll be the devil's advocate here...
I personally see this as a double-case of animal cruelty.
In the first instance the bird was severely neglected due to selfishness and apathy.
In the second case the bird is being abused under the umbrella of 'rescue'. Just because we can undertake a battery of procedures to prolong life doesn't mean it's the right or humane thing to do.
The 'right' thing to have done, IMO, was to give the bird as good a home as possible with min. intervention, and then to euthanize it when the time was right instead of prolonging the suffering of the animal.
This is just horribly wrong.
