An introduction - we only have 1 bird!
Hello all! I am new to the Birdboard and have been having a lot of fun reading all the different threads.
I am the proud owner of an almost 2 year old Senegal named Monkey. We adopted her from The Bird Shop in Sacramento, CA when she was just a few months old. My girlfriend was really the one who wanted the bird and we went not sure of what kind we should get. We went to the store that day to look at a parrotlet, but were shocked at how small they are. With 2 big dogs and 3 cats who have never lived with a bird, we were concerned. The very nice lady at the store suggested the Senegal, told us a lot about them and we decided it was the bird for us.
What an adventure it has been so far. She earned her name because of the way she swung and climbed around her cage, like a monkey. She is an endless source of humor in our house. She is very quiet, other than this particular shriek when we leave the house, and beautiful little chirps and beeps and the occasional little song. Monkey is the boss of the house, she has all the other animals in check and no one messes with her. She does seem to especially enjoy dropping food off her cage that the dogs come and eat. She has not been sexed a female bird, we are just guessing.
After the scare of almost losing her this weekend, I'm refreshed and eager to teach her more. I don't know anything about training a parrot, but I hope that I find some good resources, books or websites that might give me some insight on how-to train.
Thanks and I look forward to making friends!
