When some birds get ready to lay eggs they get really stressed and may pant heavily. Some birds just lay an egg with no problems... it may depend on the health of the bird as to how much stress it will put on their bodies. When females have an egg inside them, you can either look for a small bump or GENTLY feel for one at her pelvic bones. If there is no rounded bump (the egg) then she may not be laying.
If within 24 hours and she's not laying an egg you might want to get her checked out by an avian vet.
