You can try some 'positive reinforcement' training, by giving a yummy treat that he only gets when you put him back in his cage. Also, try not standing in front of the cage for those last minute cuddles, he could be interpreting this as teasing. Do your cuddles on the sofa or chair, start preparing him, tell him it's nite nite time, he's going to get a yummy treat, etc. When ready, take him to his cage, show him the treat and put him right in and give him his treat, and lots of praise. He may never like leaving you, so a treat may just make it a bit more bearable.
