On one of my trips to a local bird store someone came in asking the staff members for help w/ their sick bird. I didn't catch all of the conversation but I could tell that the customer WAS NOT HAPPY when she was told to call an avian vet. The staff members even gave a local recommendation, explaining that since they are not veterinarians they could not even begin to diagnose a problem.
It's like asking a random stranger if you think that the unexplained bleeding from all your orifices is worthy of a trip to the ER... C'mon, people!
I've been to all manner of veterinary practices and clinics at all hours of the day and all days of the week for my own pets and with friends/ family. I've never once called a pet store asking for advice, save when I had my first budgies. I called them for a vet reference and high-tailed it across town when I found Kudzu floundering about on the bottom of his cage.
