great to share good things with bird lovers. As you know I live in Kathmandu Nepal where a law was passed against bird sellers/poachers recently....which was quite a good thing for many of us since the poor birds were kept in very poor conditions. tiny cages, ill fed, and sometimes sprayed with paint to keep them looking good for the ignorant buyers. There were a few legal vendors who had licenses to ship birds from neighbouring India but they too got greedy since ringnecks are abundant in the terai plains of Nepal. They would rather go and get them from the nests of the wild bird than to breed them in an avairy. I was in contact with one such vendor who showed me his license but I guess he too became overcome with greed. I went to visit the bird shop or rather hole last evening and its totally abandoned. When I asked around, they said that the police raided the area a couple of months ago and freed all the birds. I was shocked...freed?? where??? the poor little ones had no survival skills and no where to go. It would have been better if they had given them over to the avairy at the zoo (which is quite a good one). I cried when I got home thinking of all the tiny little birds out in the wild and somehow I felt glad that my Whoopie at least had a home where she was loved and cared for. Please let me know if anybody has plans to visit this part of the world...we could probably arrange a birdtalk/educational session here.
