reading some other posts, in this section, i'd just like to correct something.
Grass parrots, are, yes, native to Australia.
but the princess parrot, the regent parrot, and the superb parrot, are no grass parrots, they are from a group of birds called polytelis or easier to remember, the longtail family. there are only those three birds in the family, so they aren't really grass parrots
grass parrots, are divided into 2 main groups
there is the neaphema group, which have the smaller members, like splendids, turquisine parrots, aka turks, elegant parrots, blue winged parrots, rock parrots and rock parrots, all these birds are about budgie size, and are very placid, besides the turquisine parrot, it is not to be kept with any of the neaphema family especially the splendid parrot, the bourkes parrot has an exception though, and can be kept with any of neaphema parrots, but ill get to the bourkes later, all these birds are australian.
then there is the psephotus group which consists of the larger members, like red rumps which is the one that you all will be more familiar with, but there are also the mulga parrot, the blue bonnets, hooded parrots, the golden shouldered parrot and the almost confirmed extinct, paradise parrot, these birds are about the size of a cockatiel, maybe not as bulky. and they are all quite aggresive and are all australian.
Now you maybe thinking, i missed out the most popularist of the group, the bourkes parrot, but. the bourkes parrot is actually not a neaphema or psephotus bird. It has its own genus, called Neapsephotus.
this may sound bazar, but the bourke parrot, if u think about it is the only neaphema, without a dominent green colour. so scientists gave it its own genus/family, so there fore instead of neaphema bourkii, it is actually neapsephotus bourkii. This bird is therefore able to share quarters with any neaphema parrot, as the part reason, the neaphemas are aggressive to each other, is because they all have a dominent green colour. The bourkes parrot has, no dominent green colour, infact it has NO green colouration what so ever. It comes in a few different colours now. I no many of you bourks parrot owners, have rosa's but, there are also other colours like cream, pink, splits, fallows and yellows and some rare mutations like blue. I do not exactly like the blue or yellow, as the pink, on the bourkes parrot, is what make the bourke a bourke.
I think i'll stop writing now, but if anyone is interested more in grass parrots, i am willing to talk more about breeding, mutations, sexing, eg.
