Poohbear, I'm not sure who your rant is directed to, but seeing as how I'm one of those liberal do-gooders that you're talking about, I feel like I should respond.
I'll agree with you that lack of parental supervision and guidance is a big factor in how a child turns out. But you're also making the assumption that "no physical punishment" somehow equals "no discipline". You don't have to hit a child to teach them how to behave. And I would wager that most, if not all, the children that are breaking the law have been hit by their parents. Just like birds that are aggressive and phobic often have been abused by their guardians. Violence begets violence. I would rather teach empathy.
It is a lot harder to discipline a child proactively and positively, but it works much better than negative strategies.
