Positive reinforcement is great and of course should always be the first response, but lets be honest - their are times, situations & individuals with whom the best teacher is a swift and somewhat painful kick in the butt.
Let us not kid ourselves about the path those kids are on...
Our society can deal rather harshly with such behaviour in adults and I think we are obligated to show them exactly where it leads.
Using such extreme violence gets you confined in a small space with a bunch of individuals with a similar lack of restraint... and the chances are insanely high that one or more of them with suddenly develop a problem/attitude with you.
The way to avoid ending up there is to never again allow yourself to repeat those actions.
