Yeah, it is important to drill that starter hole in the perch, because if you don't, the perch could split and then you have nothing. And if you find a good one, why damage it putting the hanger screw in place. Drill it deep enough but not as wide as the screw that will come, so it will work properly. I know this sounds silly, but be sure to put a washer on the inside and another one on the outside to secure the perch. I saw someone put one in with both washers on one side! Gee whiz!
