Since half moons were mentioned I wanted to share our experience with a half moon. I have a 4 year old female half moon & she is not quiet. Kermit is "quieter" than many conures but not quiet in any way, shape, or form. She drives my husband crazy. If you feel that a cockatiel is loud then a half moon would not be for you. My husband actually prefers our cinnamon green cheek who I refer to as "Cujo". He would rather have biting than noise, I prefer noise to biting.
I personally think Kermit is perfect but noise doesn't bother me. Half moons are adorable. One of my favorite things is how her pupils dilate when she's excited. She talks a lot & loves attention. Half moons are wonderful birds and they are great for families.
I agree with the advice about a female cockatiel. My daughter's cockatiel passed away a few years ago. She was the quietest bird I have ever seen. She only made noise when she wanted food.
Good luck in your search.
