RonNe08, Hi! You have a lovebird that is very young and hasn't really started to get his personality revved up. He is mainly trying to figure out what to eat and how to get around in his cage. Being so young, he hasn't really gotten around to exploring, and he is new to you so he needs to get adjusted. When he has toys and things to play with, he will get more interested in the world. He will come out on his own, but once he's out, how to get him back in the cage?
The first thing to do is to start training him to step up -- which is to step on your finger. You can start this by using a 3" or so millet in your hands which he can come over to eat. At first you will just have to put the millet through the bars into the cage or clip it onto the cage bars, and let him find it. Slowly, you can get him used to this, and then start putting it in your hand. If you can put it on your hand with the palm flat, not curled up, stay still and see if he comes over to check it out. This won't happen right away, but after awhile he will come.
If he's out of the cage, and you need to get him back in, try putting a large bunch of millet on the cage door (or tie it on) and let him find it and go back in the cage (put some also inside near the door). Wait until it gets dark, and then try to lure him back to the cage. If he doesn't know how to get back inside, be sure to have millet there on the door. He will need to learn how to go inside. You might have to towel him at first to get him back.
Good luck, we will be giving you plenty of instructions as you go along!
