I live in the Hampton Roads area in the state of Virginia. We have absolutely NO emergency avian vets. We have emergency vet offices open on weekends and after hours but there is NEVER EVER an avian vet on duty in ANY of the locations in case of an emergency. Isnt that terrible? I have even voiced my concerns over this to MY regular avian vet (who is excellent by the way) that even if they could get together (there are five in this area) and maybe be placed on a stand-by call list with the emergency facilities that would be something. I have only had one emergency and I was told by all emergency places that I called that Saturday afternoon, that I could bring my bird in but basically the vet on duty had no real experience with birds. Nice Huh? I was even told by one location that I would be better off keeping my bird warm and quiet until I could see my regular vet on Monday. The bird/pet store up the street and their WONDERFUL staff.... is my emergency vet and guess what they dont cost a thing. They helped me out a couple of times. I thank god for them everyday. The staff at Pet Paradise in Virginia Beach.... you are absolutely WONDERFUL.
