Could it be rats or mice? They take the egg WHOLE back to their burrow, and would have scared the parents from going back into the box, as they'd feel trapped.
My rainbow LOVES mealworms and hooked into them as soon as a offered her one! She chews and sucks and licks the juices out of them and leaves the dry skin... ew. It is best to kill them first, like birdieluv said. Also, lorikeets breed well in nest boxes that are long and lead to a small nest chamber.
