Senegal Tantrums

My 16-month-old Senegal, Max, has started having what appear to be fits of rage when he can't have his own way. He makes a really loud horrible sound like tearing cloth, flares his wings, pins his eyes and crouches. The sound is like a hiss, but sometimes it's ear-splitting. He also does it when he's scared of something, like he's recently decided he hates cups and drinking glasses, and if he's anywhere close when I have a cup of tea, he goes nuts whenever I bring the cup up to my mouth. He's started spazzing out when I try to take him from (or give him to) my husband, who he adores. Last night I went to give him a kiss and he did his ripping cloth sound and lunged at my face, puncturing my upper lip inside and outside. I'm getting worried because he's so unpredictable right now--one minute he's sweet and goofy Max Jekyll, the next he's Mr. Hyde. Any idea what's going on with him and how best to deal with it? That injury to my lip is very painful and I really don't want anyone else to be the recipient of such a nasty bite.
