I'm not sure what you could use for the base. Maybe you could find a plastic tray that is big enough. I agree about the acrylic paint, I would use food dye as well. It's easy and the colors turn out really well. All birds have colors that they like more than others so use all colors. I have one tiel whose favorite color is green, another is red, some like blue and some don't really care.
