My cat did the same thing. She would wake up from a sound sleep twitching and would run around the room and lick herself.
I took her to the vet. 1st - vet gave her a steroid shot...cat gained 5 lbs and tried to eat me out of house and home. 2nd - vet put her on Valium. My cat was on Valium for about a year or two, was a very long time ago, but once she was off the Valium, she didn't twitch anymore.
