Herpes!
Our 9 month old CAG had been feather chewing for a month or so and we couldn't figure out what was wrong. After many tests the vet has determined that he has herpes and that it is most likely transferred by his parents. The reason he chewed off his feathers was because of skin irritation.
I am just wondering if anyone here has experienced this with their grey - it is not Pacheco's or anything like that, just part of the family of Herpes viruses. I just want to make him more comfortable as he gets treatment. Any tips or experiences to share would be very welcome. Last edited by emilybomb : 09-21-2006 at 12:54 PM. Reason: correction |

Hmmm. The herpes virus has no real cure and can recur throughout a human's life, not sure how it equates to birds. I have heard of herpes virus in birds that usually affected chicks causing death in the early stages. Apparently if they survive in the early days, they can live with marginal problems. Please keep us informed as you have your grey treated. We love to learn on BB.
