Several Problems...Regurgitating, plucking, etc...

I have had a CAG for about a year now, was almost a year old when we got her. Her chest feathers have never really had the "look" of a grey, always seem to be kind of chewed up. The vet said it was probably stress and/or the environment (meaning she was just bored).

Lately when I put my hand in her cage she will drop her wings and rest her head on my hand while making a "cooing" sound, then start regurgitating until I walk away. This has been going on for over a month. Just within the last week, she has almost completely plucked her chest and under her wings.

She is healthy aside from this behavior. The diet is a combination of some seed, pellets, fresh fruits and veggies. Always plenty of clean water on hand.

Any ideas?

Mike and Smokey

Hmmm, well she deffo doesn't have an issue with you... she's in love! Food doesn't seem an issue either.

How many hours a day is she left alone? Is her cage large enough and filled with all types of toys?

She's not really home alone at all. My wife is a stay at home mom. Spends time with Smokey all day. The have regular conversations, Smokey is free to come out of her cage almost all the time. She will climb to the top to play, stay in her cage and play (plenty of toys inside and out) or hop down and walk around the house...She like to wander over to my wife and peck at her toes.

I also have a cockatiel that is in another cage a few feet away and they whistle back and forth all day. By the way, this cockatiel is over 30 years old. I caught this one about 30 years ago when I was a kid. I was out in the backyard and saw the bird up on a power line. I put my hand up and the bird flew right down to me. Never had any luck finding the owner back then. Does anyone know how old I can expect this bird to live. He does show signs of aging, but like a Timex, just keeps on ticking.

Oh, and the cage is large enough for a macaw (should be big enough for Smokey) to be comfortable. I don't think that is an issue.

Sounds like she's getting great attention and is occupied... you're doing great by her.

So she's had feather issues that have just gotten worse? Have you tried these plucking sprays that are about? I've also seen people use a bird sweater to try and stop plucking too...
Plucking and stress are pretty common in Greys. I know there are some members here who deal with that in their CAGs... so hopefully they'll have tips that they've found help.

If she's in love with you then I guess even if there were loads of people home all day everyday... if they aren't you then it's just not good enough in her little loved up birdie eyes.

BUMPING thread for you. Hope someone can give tips & advice.

Oh and I think the average lifespan for a 'tiel is 15-20, but I've heard of some in their 30's. You have a very healthy 'tiel there!
