Handling and Restraint

Hi - I should be grateful if anybody could give me details of handling and restraint techniques for an African Grey Parrot and why these restraint techniques are necessary?
Cheers,
Liam.

well, restraining them is not really necessary unless being checked by a vet?

None needed, Greys handle and restrain us just fine as it is.

(ok ok, not an answer, but I couldn't resist!)

As Lisa said, not needed unless it's a vet visit or a toenail trim at times if the bird dislikes it.

I have all my guys LOVING to be toweled. Really helps out when it becomes necessary. As they all will lay on their backs to have their nails done, and let me "stretch" their wings for clips (Dudders is working on actually holding his out!)... not sure when this would be. But I like to be prepared!

Gosh I wish Paco would let me touch anything other than the back of his neck! I can't imagine getting him into a carrier or a flight suit or harness, all of which will happen one day. For now, my back up plan is to enlist the help of a parront friend he is madly in love with--he tries to climb inside her mouth, and then STILL lifts up a foot to try to get closer to her--and gets all embarrassed and does the heh heh heh laugh, so I think she will be able to take him to the vets for a check up, nail trim, blood work, etc. soon. I just don't want to trim his feathers before he learns to fly. He is 14, and I think it is a shame he has not learned to fly yet.
So little by little, I keep trying to touch him!

Restraining is great for physical exams as well as grooming....
