Lovely bird, however, I think allowing the family pitbulls such close scrutiny is an accident waiting to happen. JMHO.

Yeah Kristal,

may be putting together a funeral soon. I hope you take everyone's advice and not allow your dogs near your Grey or even in the same room as far as I'm concerned. I know people that swore that their dog(s) would never harm their bird and then came home to find that the dogs had in fact killed it. Very sad.

I have to agree completely with everyone else's warnings regarding birds and other pets co-mingling like that.

I lost a parrot (Quaker) to my daughter's 10 lb dog in the span of a minute and a half. And it was accidental. (unlatched cage, a climb down to the floor... while people were occupied elsewhere in the house).

Even if your dogs don't MEAN any harm, they can still severely injure your bird just by trying to play with it! One swipe or a "whomp!" from a 50 lb dog's paw and some serious damage can be done.
A "mouthing" that might not injure even the most delicate human hand or foot, might really injure a bird pretty badly, especially if the bird is startled and flaps wildly or squawks loudly and the dogs get excited by those actions.

PLEASE keep your dogs (and cats and ferrets) AWAY from your birds at all times. Save yourself from potentially big heartaches.

I do want to add though; your CAG looks awesome! I'm kinda jealous.
I can't get another parrot for at least another 6 months - a year.
I just have my two boyz you see in the picture. But they are my sweeties.

Well I'm right there with them, my dogs play with my sugar gliders all night and when I had my ferret, he slept with my dogs. My macaw also rides my dogs around the house. I'll have to dig those pictures out of whatever file they might be in. My dogs love other animals, and I'm very strict with them about playing harsh with small animals, If you look at the last picture my dog Jeep is laying down next to her, because he knows that he has to be very careful, and busa is not touching her at all. If they get to close I just show them the spray bottle and they back off right away. My families have raised pit bulls for years, and I've raised them and have breed them for many years. These dogs have been around 1 day old puppies, and know that they must be very careful. The bird is also used to big dogs, because the breeder has a rottweiler that loves all the birds she has.

well ok, sorry to hear you won't learn from other's mistakes and experiences. Really sorry for the CAG, too.

Good Luck

no need to feel sorry, in 20 years we will still be one big happy family, well sadly my dogs will probably not make it that long, but my grey and macaw will still be my babies. Good training and discipline goes a long ways, especially in these dogs, and it's not like they are always together. They are rarely within several feet of her, so chill out....jeezz, nothing like coming to a board for the first time and getting slammed.....not a hi! welcome to the board, I'll just go back to my other boards.

Slammed? you call these posts getting "slammed?"

Sheeesh. talk about thin skinned.

Well whatever....

You have a beautiful bird, and beautiful dogs there...
Training has NOTHING to do with it.
Training won't make your situation perfect and untouched by
accidents. Training has nothing to do with INSTINCT.
The dogs' instincts and the birds' instincts.

but like I said, Good Luck. Sorry you feel "slammed"

Krystal, welcome to the board! I know its not much, even after feeling like you just got slammed... Your grey is lovely, and the dogs look gorgeous! However, whenever I hear the word pitbull, I think about the ones that are outlawed in Florida....

Anyway, I don't see it as too much of a problem as long as you are there watching the dogs or any other mammal in the household when the birds are out. Just be extremely carefull, as it sounds like you have been doing. I, myself, have a bird that survived being put on her death bed after being attacked by a ferret (a few homes ago), and I've already lost one bird (my first pet budgie) to a cat (which I couldn't do much about because I wasn't there).

Now though, I've got my own dog who is still in training (he's only about 8 months, maybe 9 months old now, and he really never got any good training till the age of 6 months, luckily, he's so much better than what I thought he would be compared to other pups I've been around). Casey, my tiel, occasionally flies down to the floor, and he likes to go and sniff her, however, I don't let her be on the ground long enough for Bullet, the dog, to do anything besides a good look and a sniff. There are also 2 cats in the household (though they are not mine) who have crawled into my room via the heater vent, or through my window (because they got stuck outside, these two cats are about 1yr old, and have been known to kill wild birds in the past as young as 4 months, and the first was a wild quail).

I'm just saying to be carefull about the mammals in the household, especially say if you have a ferret!
