Greys and REM Sleep...

As I type this Bella is fast asleep, but while she sleeps I'll occassionally hear a small little 'peep' sound come from her, so I have to wonder if our greys dream...

Wow, I don't know. Mine doesn't peep, she usually will grind her beak which tells me she's still awake, but barely. If I make a noise she'll fluff her feathers but I figure that's more of an agravation response because I've awoken her.

Hmmm...not sure if they dream.
But I'll tell you this, I feel TERRIBLE when Tuki falls asleep and then falls off his perch! It freaks me out -- so I can't imagine what a horrible JOLT it is to wake up that way!!!

If ya think that's a jolt, imagine how frightening it is for them when they do that in the wild.

Falling off a perch in a cage at home is considerably easier than falling off a branch 50' up a tree into a pitch black jungle crawling with things lookin to eat ya......

Ya have to wonder with sometime so intelligent as a grey, if it has dreams.
I say yes.
Night fright is most associated with Cockatiels, however Emma had it this morning. She was afraid of something, so I took her out and cuddled her for a while. I had to clean her cage paper to show her nothing was there. I sat there with her as she sat with her head upside down, letting me know how unhappy and nervous she was.

The reasons for night fright are unknown. I think alot of times its from dreams.

Sampson used to sing himself to sleep. It was really cute.

Maybe a mouse? My cat went tearing across the room last night and I found her staring into the utility closet. That's also where I found her in the morning! Getting colder out and the critters are trying to move in.

I really think they do dream, and not just greys. I was just reading an article about parrots and their sleeping patterns today and they do go into REM.
Rico, my U2, does this coo in the middle of the night. I know he's doing it when he's dreaming. I just know. In my opinion, their too intelligent not to dream.

It's in the Manual of Parrot Behavior, like the 7th chapter or something.
