Does my new Tag need something special to sleep on or in?

I just got a four month old TAG. He/she is a bit uncoordinated and doesn't perch very well. When it was getting close to bed time, he crawled down to the bottom of the cage which has a grill and seemed to be trying to dig through the grill to get to the bottom. Finally, I covered him for the night and it seemed he spent a long time flapping around and trying to get settled. His new cage has several perches (one wood dowel, one natural wood, one rope boing thing) and I am willing to get him whatever he needs. I'm just not sure what to get him. When he was quiet I peaked around the sheet covering the cage and saw he was on the rope boing thing...but I'm not sure he looked all that comfortable. Does this sound like typical first night restlessness or does he need something special for sleeping? I know the conyers and some of the smaller birds sleep in happy huts and things like that but I thought the bigger birds slept on a perch....

When I was getting ready for Bella to come home I got her four pearches one to make it easy to get back and forth to food/water/soft foods, one to use for daily play, a sandy and a corner pearch. I do not use the dowl pearch at all except the sandy pearch are natural wood pearches. Bella the first night she came was a little nervous with the idea of being covered so I only cover her up half way at first until she falls asleep.

Bella sleeps on the slender part of a natural wood forked pearch, and she's a pro at it for being only 4 1/2 months. And I think that looks uncomfortable, but if your TAG is comfortable on the boing I wouldn't worry the little guy is still getting adjusted. I would get rid of the dowl though and get another natural and a jumbo sandy pearch.

I agree with bekfreak. My Severe Macaw should be ready to come home in about a week & the breeder told me the same thing that bekfreaks saying. I also have a Sun Conure but as you said Michele, she sleeps in a happy hut. Its really cute. The first night I got her I turned off the lights & watched her climb right in her little bed, lay down on her side & go to sleep. It was the sweetest thing. Crystal

Make sure the floor of the cage isn't to far away from the perch in case she should fall. Build it up with a box or something.

Just getting comfy!

That's what I did Grandma!
When I first got my CAG, Tuki, he was very uncoordinated.
I covered the grill on the bottom of the cage in a towel with paper shopping bag on top and put one perch very low for him. I also got him a happy hut in case he wanted it. (he was trying to climb into my shirt when cuddling before bed every night)

He has MUCH better balance now (at 5 months) but I still keep one perch low.

No worries -- I really think that it was first night jitters and also just trying to find a nice place to get comfy.

My CAG now sleeps on the top of his boing every night (and afternoon naps)...he LOVES it!

This is Exactly what is recommended. Place a towel on the grate, cover with newspaper, paper towel( my suggestion) or paper bag. keep the perches LOW. if he falls, he wont get hurt. If you hear him flapping, stay near the cage. CHECK HIM.It could be he is restless or could be he is caught on something and needs your help. Never, leave them alone flapping with out checking them. It could be life or death.

It doesnt matter whether any of our guys are 3 months or 30 years old...if they flap..CHECK THEM!
