herpes!
Our 9 month old CAG had been feather chewing for a month or so and we couldn't figure out what was wrong. After many tests the vet has determined that he has herpes and that it is most likely transferred by his parents. The reason he chewed off his feathers was because of skin irritation.
I am just wondering if anyone here has experienced this with their grey - it is not Pacheco's or anything like that, just part of the family of Herpes viruses. I just want to make him more comfortable as he gets treatment. Any tips or experiences to share would be very welcome. x-posted in get help area. Last edited by emilybomb; 09-20-2006 at 11:54 PM. |

I cant say I have heard of this before. Tho, I do know there are illnesses that can be passed from mom to chick and even some that can penetrate the egg shell and infect the embryo. What did the dr say to do, and did you contact the breeder? they should have some info they can share with you to make it easier on you.
Please let us know.

The vet is going to run another test in a week to make sure he isn't contagious and then there are antibiotics that they can try. I did contact the buyer of birds for the SuperPet he is from and she is contacting the breeder, she spoke to my vet as well. I'll let you know how things go, thank you.
Also I've corrected my post for accuracy...thanks.
