Question Pros and Cons of free flying

Hi there. I have been doing a ton of research and a few things confuse me that I am hoping you all can help me with. I have read never to allow your birds primary flight feathers grow in as it can be dangerous for the birds in the household ie. hot water on the stove, windows, etc. yet, I have also read that flying allows them to flee a situation or avoid falling hard. I was hoping that you could tell me your experiences and ideas on the subject first hand. Thank you in advance!

You are opening up a can of worms!!!

IMO, if your situation SAFELY allows you to allow a flighted bird, go for that option... but if you have dangers, such as people constantly coming in and out, things being burned that shouldn't, screenless windows constantly open... i.e. if you can't control your household situation, then I don't recommend a flighted bird.

It certianly IS healthier to have a flighted bird, but even a clipped bird can get exercise if done so properly. Of course, there's also times that flighted birds could become aggressive and stubborn, so a clip could adjust their attitudes. Right now, I have 13 birds. None are clipped, however two cannot fly (ones too weak or?? another clipped herself), and so there are a certain few that I WONT clip. However, others, if I think it could be beneficial for the birds, in some way, I'll clip them.. such as Casey, one of my tiels... she enjoys going outside to sit on our apple tree, so during the warmer months I may clip her to be able to safely take her out... otherwise, she's cage-free and flighted along with Noel, cherry head conure (one that is weak, or otherwise... was attacked by a ferret...), as these two are buddies. I can only allow this situation however because they live in a large room, that the door is always closed to.

I'm one of those 'either or' people... depending on situation... however you may receive posts from others that are pro-clipping or pro-flight. IMO, it is for you to learn what is best for you and your birds situation, and then act accordingly to.
