African grey, of course! Then again, I'm awfully partial.

I was under the impression that they have wildely different personalities. I think amazons are beautiful but I believe they get more hormonal and aggressive when they think its "breeding" season.

I was also under the impression that amazons were more bold birds, but my african grey has not shown any signs of being shy or timid in the least so these steriotypes always differ.

I'm sure someone will come along with more information for you, but I'm glad you are doing your research before buying!

Remember that both birds will require several hours of out of cage interaction every day, a diet of fesh fruits and veggies along with pellets, a really large cage with lots of fun and expensive toys that they will probably destroy and will probably outlive you.

I must say...If I would choose, I would never get hot3-amazon, because of their hormons..

But on the other hand, african grey is a typical one person bird(even then if its properly socialized). I love my CAG, but she is just my bird..even though we have socialized her well( she is use to other people and their handling..and travelling) When she game mature, she changed to typical grey..a bit shy, reserved and so on. Greys are known of their susceptibility to start pick their feathers too.

So if you want a familybird, amazon would be better...but some other species than hot3..like LCA, MA, MRHA, OWA, RLA.. YCA is very nice, when you dont want so hormonal bird but still it would be a bit "spicy"

greys or amazons

We raise amazons, 5 species and 3 types of greys. Greys do become a one person bird most of the time but i have had amazons that only want to be handled by one person also. As for funny characters, chaco blue fronts are too cool, funny, good talkers and love to make us laugh. Lilac crowns are more quiet, napes are amusing and dyh's are great talkers but very independent. Timneh's are excepting of more new things, congo's and cameroons are a bit more shy to new things and people. We have raised timneh's that were talking at 5 months old, congo's take longer to start forming words. Amazons can start talking at 6 mos in sentences.....Depends what you can offer the bird for amusement thru out the day. My chaco bf pet and dyh talk all day to my other cockatoo pets....No humans needed in the bird room to keep the conversation going........lol...... Three of my birds love to say.....Who's screaming ??????:

grey or amazon

I am partial to the Timnehs and both we have had were great with the whole family, unlike my husband's BF, who detested everyone but him. Hey, Denmor, how do the Green Cheeks get along with your greys? We're about to bring our new baby GC home soon.

It depends on what you are looking for in a bird. Echo is my bird, but the whole family can handle him. Not all birds will talk, even birds who are known as wonderful talkers. I have heard that amazons can be hormonal and bond to one person and can be loud. But then again, if you are the main caretaker and no one else handles the bird, it will bond to you. And any bird can be loud.
