feeding Tags & Cags
I live in India and we do not get 'Pre-packed' foods so I feed by CAG only natural foods.
Jojo ( my CAG ) loves ( apart from sunflower seeds & peanuts ) corn on the cob, pomegranates, guavas, sweet lime, figs, sugarcane, carrots, tomatoes, french beans, peas in the pod, bell peppers, green chillis, sweet lime/oranges, almonds, cashew nuts, melon & pumpkin seeds. Once in a way he also gets some greens like spinach, coriander, brocolli, lettuce etc. Of course, all the above items may not be available throughout the year, so he gets a good mix of whats in season. He's 9 months old and has been eating the above since he was weaned at around 3 months. Luckily, he's not a fussy eater and is willing to try anything. In fact , he goes for the 'new' item in the food dish first. So, instead of curiosity 'killing the cat' its 'keeping the parrot healthy'. I guess whats good for the CAG is good for the TAG. |

Hi everyone. Thought I'd post an update since it's been a couple of weeks and there has been some change. My Timneh is finally eating pellets and with the same enthusiasm that she had for seeds. I really had my doubts that it would ever happen because she was so stubborn for so long. Over a couple of weeks, me and my wife tried several different methods of getting her to convert. The method that ultimately worked was to keep pellets in her dish throughout the day and offer seeds only for about 1/2 hour to 45 minutes of the day in the evening. At first she wouldn't even touch the pellets. Then, she'd pick them up and simply drop them. Eventually, she began grinding them up in her beak (not really eating them....just playing with them). After that she began to actually eat them. Once she was eating enough of them, we discontinued the seeds.
At the dinner table, she has also begun to eat (not just play with) cooked carrots, brocoli, rice, and zucchini. So, it CAN be done. The only suggestion I would make is that you have to monitor your bird closely during the conversion to make sure she's eating enough (watching her droppings, etc.). It's kind of a balance between making sure she's not starving but still hungry enough to eat the new food. I definately have more peace of mind knowing she's eating healthier. |
