Hackberry Trees
Hi everyone,
I would like to make my own perches/stands for my birds. I have a hackberry tree in my backyard and would like to know if it would be safe to use and what I need to do to prepare the wood before building a stand/perch? Thanks |

Hackberry is safe from the lists that I've checked.
As for methods to prepare... Here's one way from Safe and Dangerous Woods SAFE & UNSAFE WOOD FOR BIRDS (updated 10-24-00) Wash all wood in a bleach solution, rinse then for small branches bake in oven at 250 for about 1 hour and for large branches wash, rinse and dry in direct sun. Someone else mentioned cleaning branches then putting them in the oven for at least 15 minutes at 300* while another member said to put branches in oven for 30 minutes at 200*
