Silent Grey

Im sure some of you may be thinking “I wish I had this problem sometimes” but I want to ask if I should be at all concerned about my quiet bird. When I first got him home (after the settling period) you could set your watch by his morning and evening squarking/whistling sessions. Over the last few weeks he started making lots of new “noises” that were seemed have more “human” tones to them, I thought great, he’s trying to imitate human speech.

However, over the last 6/7 days he hasn’t muttered a sound. I am not concerned over his health at all, he still relishes his out of cage time, plays with his toys and is eating very well. The only thing that has changed in this feathery little character is the fact that he doesnt make any noise any more.

Any thoughts guys ???

Cheers

Jay & Charlie (CAG)

You should be aware. Glad you did notice!
He may be just adjusting to his new home and routines. (he's learning about his new world). OR he may be stressed out and trying to adjust.
Either way, keep him on his/your new routine.

Good luck!! Wishin you all well!!

They have emotional ups and downs and "quiet times" and party times just like we do. If all else is going well, I wouldn't worry about a temporarily quiet grey.

And believe me, this will be temporary ::

I on the other hand get very conserned with a quiet grey.
there are times when a grey will be more quiet. As in when they are moulting and growing new feathers. I would check if this is the case.
If it does not appear to be the case I suggest a vet visit and some tests run for Aspergillosis.
My thoughts come from past experiences. My one grey the only symptom was his voice.

Greys and Amazons are more susceptible to asper because of the amount of air taken in with their talking. Asper spores are in our environment everywhere. We all breath them in. IT is when we are sick or immune compromised, we develop the disease. It also can be a secondary infection due to antibiotics.

I am not trying to scare you in any way. Just trying to share my experience.

Thanks Lisa, his condition has worsened over the last few days with mucus starting to appear out of his vents. After your advice and further research i fear that he is showing the symptoms of Aspergillosis. I am taking him the vet at 3pm today and i will keep all who are interested updated via this thread.

I am really worried as there have been some tragic stories about this particualr illness i just hope that i have caught it in time.

Thanks again

Jay & (a very poorly) Charlie
