Question TailFeathers

Goose is almost a year old now and only has 2 red tailfeathers, he has some more but they are really small like some other grey feathers. We went to a pet store that had a baby grey that was 3 months with many red tail feathers, If anyone knows why or has ideas let me know!

tail feathers

Are the feathers broken? If they are, they may not molt properly. You may have to pluck them. This makes the new feathers come in. If you are worried about it, have your vet check to see if they are broken, and he can pluck them.

Our little CAG is 12wks old and has all her tail feathers, I'm pretty sure she had them all in big and red the first time we went to see her at 7wks.
I would take the little one in to the vet and see what they say.

Oh gosh my boys tails are a mess... they play so hard they fall, they climb, they spar, they fall and did I mention they fall? I have a female now and she plays pretty hard too. Mine are 3, 9, and 12 years old and I WISH they would molt me a pretty tail feather!!

Our Skoobie Doo (a Timneh) has dark red (marroon) tail feathers and grey (some dark grey) tail feathers. I think that there's just a variety of visual traits. I don't think it's really anything to worry about. Oh, he's about 3 years old now.

It's my guess that you have a Timneh African Grey. There are traditionally accepted two different Grey subsets.

The Timneh

and The Congo.

(I think there's another one that people are starting to differentiate as well called the "Camaroon" I think, but it's not officially recognized). African Grey Parrot - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It's my understanding and experience that Congo African Greys have brighter red tail feathers. It's possible the other grey you saw was a Congo and your grey is a Timneh. They say that Congo's are also larger than Timneh's, however our Timneh is at least 15% larger than the Congo at one of our local pet stores. They also say that Congo's are "better talkers", but I've got no comparitive experience with that to voice it either way. Our Skoobie Doo chat's up a storm.
