how old when eyes turn light?

Just curious. I was at a pet store in Halifax and there was a beautiful Grey there that tugged at my heartstrings. His eyes were light. There were two others there that still had dark eyes.

I was told that the light-eyed Grey was 6 months old and that the dark-eyed Greys were three months.

I have a feeling I was lied to about the age of the light-eyed Grey. I thought that the eyes changed color at around 12 months or so?

I was disgusted by the pet store in general--walls full of puppies, lots of birds, etc. It left a bad taste in my mouth.

I dont have a Grey but my understanding is that their eyes will be as light as they will get by 12 months. And that they start to lighten up at about 6 months of age. That is what a breeder told me. But I was telling her that I wanted a one year old, so maybe she was leading me on?? I know with Amazons they start to change at 6 months, so maybe they have that in common.

I hate those pet stores. I went to a "bird" pet store. The birds looked horrible. The feathers on almost all the birds were just nasty looking. And the stench was overwhelming. Everyone was in a small cage. Some of the cages (cockatiel size) had 4 or 5 birds. And the ladie did not know what most of them were. And questions were not answered or even welcomed. You almost want to take them all just to get them out of there.

Lisa, Bing was four months old on the 20th. His eyes have lightened a little but they wouldn't be called light by any standard. It is my understanding that the light yellow colored eyes happen at about a year.

One of those greys really caught your attention didn't it?

Yes, he/she did!

I turned a corner and suddenly there he was...looking right at me, across a wide aisle. I went over and he hung upside down in the cage pressing his neck against the bars for scritches. I stood there for about 20 minutes scratching, petting, touching his beak, giving him kisses.

What's weird is that my friend wasn't even able to touch him at all. It felt like he thought I was something special, too. How I wish I could have spirited him away with me.
