Can I ask, where are you located?

We are in the Los Angeles area. I had to go yesterday and collect her body, and I took it to my avian vet for the necropsy. The whole day was just horrible. I just took one of her bowls out of the dishwasher and it tore me up.

Unhappy :-(

I'm so sorry for the loss of your baby- There could have easily been something underlying that just took advantage with her being so stressed out. Anything from low calcium, to hardening of the arteries. Unfortunately, the heart and artery problems can't usually be detected previously, and the only symptom we get to see is finding our poor pet passed on. I'm glad to hear that they are doing a post for you, and I'm interested to see what they find. Though if they were holding her wrong, and were compressing her keel with their hands, she could have suffocated, but I doubt that is what actually happened. Once again I'm so, so sorry, and I hope you can cherish the memories you have of her.. I recommend a web site that I've heard about.....lafeberwingsofcompassion.com/ It's a place where we can share the memories of our feathered pals, and hopefully ease the pain of losing them.

preliminary results

The Vet said she was sending out some samples to labs so I dont have an answer, but she did say that my bird had a larger than normal heart, dont know if thats related or not.

What does that mean? If she had a larger than normal heart? I started crying and didn't have hte wherewithall to ask at the time.

I'm not a cardiologist, I didn't even do well in high school biology, but from what I've heard an enlarged heart doesn't pump as efficiently and is more prone to heart failure. I think sometimes it is genetic, sometimes it is from a virus or other health problem. I would imagine it would be hard to detect in an otherwise healthy bird.

Anybody with more information about this will not offend me if they correct anything I said that was not correct.

i'm so sad for your loss

Hi Novi~

I can't imagine the pain you must be going through, I've only had Martini for a few months now and we are inseparable.

I'm sorry for your loss and I'm glad that you are going to get closure and find out why this happened.

I'm pretty scared to even bring Martini to get wings done again after reading your story. It doesn't sound like you could have done a thing to prevent this tragedy.

I am sorry for your loss. In humans an enlarged heart is known as cardiomegaly. If you do a internet search for cardiomegaly you will find some information that may help ease your pain. One thing to keep in mind unless your friend was showing some type of symptom it would go unnoticed. In people cardiomegaly is sometimes found when a routine chest x-ray is done, then further tests are usually ordered. Your vet will be able to explain the condition to you. I hope this helps ease your loss.

Tom is right. With an enlarged heart, the heart has to work even harder to keep up with the body's demands. Therefore, it puts additional stress on it making it prone to failure.
