Optimus is a Girl!
Well, I was right--Optimus is a girl! Gonna have to change the name, I think. She also tested clear for PBFD and Chlamydia. The vet said she looked awesome, except for her rough feathers, of course. Feathering actually looks better already, as all the pinfeathers she had coming in are opening up and covering the bald spots. She is a wonderful bird. We love her so much already. She is a bit thin--any suggestions on how to fatten her up? Just wanted to share the good news!

A good diet with possible a digestion suppliment is best. Dont over feed or feed fatty foods - it can imbalance her other ways. Just keep up with whatever your doing and she will fatten up! cooked Quinoa is a great snack!!!!

I thought girl with you, too Yay for pretty ladies!!!If you do change it, as Greys are QUITE intelligent, she may not like her new name. Just saying. My ekkie likes her nickname "Scar" or "Scar Scar" better than Scarlett. I don't know why, but when I call her Scar Scar or ask "Where you going Scar?" I actually get a response. If I call her Scarlett at any time other than bed time, I get ignored. I think she's renamed herself. Maybe, if you're set on changing it, shorten it. Like "Timus" or "Opti" or something similar. Those aren't very appealing, but I'm sure you can think of something better.

Yes, according to the woman I adopted her from, she is named after Optimus Prime, which I guess is a Transformer? I know absolutely nothing about this. Even though I have an 8 year old in the house, we're not Transformer fans. I have experimented a bit with calling her Opti. Sounds more feminine than Optimus, but it's not a complete change for her. She's so sweet, and I'm SOOO relieved that her PBFD came up clear. I'm such a worrier, and I did quite a bit of obsessing about her rough feather condition before I got that email today!

Thanks everyone. It was love at first meeting with this girl, and I'm so happy it looks like she's healthy, despite the years of cigarette smoke she was exposed to. She is a good eater--seems to really like her fruits, veggies, pellets, sunflower seeds (she got a lot of those in her former home), and Eggo waffles (we found out when she hopped into the back seat on the way to the vet and begged from my 5 year old daughter). Oh, and she LOVES smart food popcorn. :) Not sure why she's skinny if she ate this well in her former home, but she's sure to put on weight quickly while she's here! She has already been on a playdate with us, and calmly watched 5 kids--ages 7 months, 2, 5, 5 1/2, and 8--run around and play for a couple of hours. She even joined in and had a snack when the kids snacked. She calmly held a 'nilla wafer in her little foot and munched away with the kids. I felt badly for her because she is being quarantined in the garage by herself. The house is only a 2 minute walk down the road, so I figured I'd simply bring her back home if she seemed stressed. But she stayed the whole time! She seems to be a very well-adjusted little grey.
Oh, and we've decide to keep her name, too. If she knows how to say it already, who am I to take it away from her? I'll call her Opti for short. |
