Suggestions Please?
Fonzie Is Our 8 Month Old Grey. He Seem To Be In Good Health, But Has A Tendency To Take His Beak And Go Back And Forth Through His Feed Dish, Throwing Feed Everywhere. We've Tried Giving Him Treats, Such As Peanuts Which He Once Liked, But Now Seems To Scoff. Lately, Fonzie Seems To Like Grapes And Walnuts. I Know There Has To Be More. My Wife Senegal Will Eat Just About Anything She Eats, Even Popcorn Shrimp, But Not Fonzie. He Seems To Be As Picky As Our Tiels And Quakers. "does Anyone Have More Suggestions That Fonzie May Like, I Know He'd Appreciate Your Suggestions."

hi...in the wild the forage for food, and that is what he is doing in his food bowl....
Careful with grapes...they have been causing sickness and deaths in parrots lately...we are all still trying to figure out what it is, but most, if not all people I know have stopped with the grapes....there was a warning about 3 weeks ago ..the grapes are from chili..... best thing to do (and really the only thing you can do) is keep trying different foods and act like you are eating them and offering them to your grey. i have to greys that I swear eat so fast, they dont even taste what I give them...Sydney, my 3rd grey, on the other hand is scofts at most things I try to get him to eat...he's an ole apple and nut kinda boy... :aiwebs_01 most of my guys love spagetti....do you give your guys this??they love to throw it, run through it and swallow it whole**LOL** This might be a great way to show your grey that new things are fun.... let me know how it works out!!!!

Hi! My grey used to do the same thing. He'd either just dump the food all out, ram his beak through it till it all flew out, or just eat the sunflower seeds. I changed his food to Harrisons. I wasn't sure if he'd like it since it looks so plain, but he loves it and gobbles is right up! If you don't already, I'd give your grey more table food. I've read of some owners that actually set a place for their bird to eat at the table with them. I wouldn't go that far, but I usually give my Grey a little bit of whatever I have. He LOVES Mac n Cheese! I started a list of what he likes and what he doesn't. He's pretty picky but will usually eat whatever I give him right off because he get's excited for something new. Hope that helps.
Jen

Hi Jen, it is grey't that you let your grey taste what you're eating, but I'd watch how much Mac n cheese (and other dairy) that you give your bird. They don't have the ability to digest dairy like we do. You don't want to make him sick.
Glennzsite, Lisa gave you some good info! Something else that should be kept in mind (I'm not sure how much parrot experience you have), Parrots are messy eaters. They WILL throw their food, that's just what they do. I think it's a fun little game for them. I had to constantly clean the wall next to my old grey's cage. It was a total mess. But, if I wanted a mess free pet, I'd get a pet rock!!! 'Njoy!!! |

Emma, (disabled congo grey) is able to pick her foot up over her head and wind up like a baseball pitcher, and throw her food. It' funny to see....and she gets some distance with her tosses!!
I come home and find NO food left in her bowl, and she is very angry **giving me the evil eye** because she is hungary...and had no food.. :aiwebs_01

Hey, you haven't lived until you have 4 BG macaws rummaging. Talk about a mess!
Lisa is correct about birds foraging. They are hardwired to do so. Also, I think that greys in particular really like to look at what they are eating. The real problem is the bowls we serve them in. They are too deep and don't allow the diner the opportunity to see what's for lunch. My TAG and my CAG both dump everything on the cage papers and then do down for dinner. I line my grates and ALWAYS make sure there are clean papers in the cage before I feed any bird here. In all likelihood, they are ground feeders in the wild. I'm not certain, but I wouldn't be surprised. THE OUTLAW

"I'm shocked?"
Thank you very much for your advice, but Fonzie shocked me. My wife still thinks Fonzie isn't eat enough, though the pet store owner think's differently. A few nights ago, I was eating some hamburgers from 'Burger King,' when Fonzie came over and just stared at me, almost like my dog Samson once used to do. I told Fonzie, "You not a meat eater." Fonzie just kept staring at me until finally I told him 'Ok, here you are and gave him a piece of hamburger, which he reached out and took from me. Before I knew it he'd finished it and was wanting another piece, which he devoured too? I used to joke with Fonzie, that he thought he was an Eagle, but I always thought parrots were vegetarians, for now, it's like he expects me to feed he meat when i'm eating it, just like my wife's Senegal, Zoey.-
