The camera is a Canon digital.

I've gotta figure out what's up with Optimus. I know it's something, but the vet hasn't been able to figure it out yet. Anyone have any ideas? Here are the issues:

--Plucked feathers. And she always seems itchy

--thin, even though she has a pretty good appetite

--has these weird wheezing episodes where she holds her wings away from her body and breathes strangely--sounds to me like the noise is in upper respiratory rather than lower

--remainder of the time she is happy, active, and VERY vocal and interactive

--she lived with a smoker for 6 years

--didn't have the greatest diet for 6 years, either

--right now, she gets roudybush natural pellets soaked in apple juice, which she might eat a bite or two of. Likes her grapes and carrots. I'm giving her palm oil supplements right now, too. I give her a small handful of her junk seed mix in the pm, because she can't afford to lose more weight.

So what am I (and the vet) missing? We've tested for PBFD, Chlamydia, and Asper. She has also had her stool checked--all normal. Could it be zinc poisoning? Vitamin deficiency? Some other disease? Lung damage from the years of smoke exposure? This is the sweetest, most talented, funniest little scrawny, ratty bird. I just want her to feel good and not have these attacks anymore. To me, they look like asthma attacks. We've only had 2 or 3 in the month-plus that she's been with me. But when she has them, they're scary. She makes kind of a nasally, wheezy, quieter sound more frequently, without the wing posture.

is she hunkering down and dropping and quivering her wings while she is making the noise and looking at you?

If you still haven't found the answer then have a look at my post in THIS THREAD. As I said there, the lady I've mentioned is exceptionally experienced in the area of poorly birds!

I'm not advertising for her or anything it's just I 'know' her through a UK parrot forum and I know how many birds she's brought back from the brink of death and how many she's managed to help recover from various illnesses.

Beaks--

She did this once, and her cloaca was also kind of opening and closing. Sorry to be graphic, but I looked because I thought maybe egg-binding was the problem. But her hunkered-down position and the quivering looked a lot like the mating position I've seen, so I thought maybe this was a sexual thing? But the other day, it was slightly different--same sounds, same positioning of the wings, but no quivering. And something about the episode just felt different. I dunno--this sweet baby has me confused. I will check out that website. I'm also going to a bird show tomorrow, and Liz Wilson will be there. I'm going to take my video and show it to her. It was of the second episode--the one where Optimus "felt" like she was in distress. Liz would know, wouldn't she? I'd almost like to bring Optimus with me, but I'm kind of afraid of exposing her to stuff. Should I bring her?

Well, Lisa--looks like you were right. Liz took one look at my video and said "Oh, that bird's feeling sexy!" She thought Opti was displaying sexual behavior and not some weird asthma attack or something. I'm relieved! I love this bird. Got my babies some new toys and some treat-kabob skewers--and myself a tee shirt. Now I've gotta go play with all my babies!
