What's going on?

So, my TAG will be a year old at the end of this month. At five months old he said "Watch the door!" and a few other random strange comments...like when we were on vacation when he was 7 months. We were all watching tv and he flew on top of the tv, obviously wanting to be the center of attention, and announced "Da-da-da-da-da-DAAA! <burp> Good boy!"

But not much since. He is not quiet by any stretch of the imagination - coos, almost purrs, clicks, screeches, yells like the kids, beeps, etc. Lots of times he mumbles, sounds like he's trying to talk but I can't understand what he's saying - kind of like if someone were talking in their sleep. Sometimes I can pick out words/phrases (hello, good boy, whatcha doin', that kind of stuff).

I honestly don't care one bit if he talks, but I'm just curious if others have experienced something like this, and what the outcome was. It's almost like he's going backwards, cause the phrases were independent of the mumbling when he was younger.

What would you predict - is he just a perfectionist gearing up to be a future conversationalist? Or more likely a chatty little mumbler?

Ziggy is going to be 18 months next month, and when he turned 1 year old he pretty much did the same. At 4/5 months he could say some simple phrases and then at 1 year he just mumbled. Now, he's saying many more phrases than before and mumble practicing others. I'd say your TAG is just stretching the vocal chords and practicing! :)

I have a CAG who is nine and he never shuts up He's always coming up with something new and the way he can put words together into phrases that make sense astounds me! He learns new things from me, the TV, or the other birds. He really likes to pick up random things the kids say. Today it was "Mommy!!!!!! I've got to peeeeeeeee!"

Sounds like he is practicing to me. Jack does a lot of that. I always say that she is gearing up to cuss me out. But Jack doesn't shut up a lot here lately either.

Our TAG Simon does the same thing you mention. He's an expert at various sound effects; whistles, beeps, knocks on the door etc..He screams like the 2 yr old and barks like the rat terrier. My favorite is how he "snaps his fingers" to the beat of music and says WOOO! He does say some things; hello (especially when the phone rings), step up, Simon, whatcha DOOOOO in among other things but he'll also hold short conversations where he'll go on and on and not a bit of it is intelligible to me. It sounds like words but its either too fast or not clear enough for me to understand. He's still picking up stuff. The new vocalization is a one syllable word that I'm really hoping is Sit! (something we say to the dogs frequently) but which is kind of coming out with an SH sound. The latter is something we really try hard not to let fly. But I can't guarantee that in a moment of weakness it hasn't. If anything Parrots make you think about what comes out of your mouth

I don't have a TAG, but my Amazon is 16 and he mumbles ALL the time! Guests are always like "What's he saying!?!?" but he is just talking and mumbling in his own world, haha! He says so many things and inflects his voice differently when he feels like it, but generally has kept to the same sentences, phrases, greetings, etc. over time. He does mumble very often though and it's hilarious to listen to sometimes. We like to interpret it like "It sounded like he just said...!" It's fun! Since your bird is pretty young he will continue to pick up phrases :) Sounds like he's got a good vocabulary already!

I have an 18 month old CAG, she was able to say "hello" when she was about 8-9 months old. Now she just whistle (learned from my caique) and she mimics my caique's noise............oh and she screams too. I don't know what happened , she is healthy and a cuddler.

usually when u hear your grey mumble it means they are practicing

when u are out of the house that's when they really practice their words

it's normal for them to stop at one point
maybe they are practicing more than a few words at a time

ajax is 18 months
his first word was hello first sound affect was the wolf whistle

lets jsut saying the time between the wolf whistle and the hello was about 6 months or so

it's a bit of time in between

now he won' stop talking
he makes several sound affects including: dog toy squeek, dog barking, dog whining, crows, wild sparrows, water dripping into a dish of water, wolf whistle, kissing sound, laughing like us, whistling, etc etc

he also says words but are quite limited: hello, peek a boo, peek a boo boo, good boy, up up, poo poo, he still mumbles other stuff i can't make it out yet
