3 Month Old CAG, Talking?
Hello everyone,
I have a CAG , her name is "Scully", that was born on 2/2/04. I brought her home after the folks at FeatherLust said she was fully weaned. My question to everyone: Is t possible for her to start talking now, at this age? I have read about CAGs not talking until they are atleast one year old? Any comments/suggestions on training her to talk would greatly be appreciated. Thank you, Scully's Dad. Edited by Tritak site admin, please read PM for more information |

There have been birds that start talking before they are even weaned, so yes, it is possible!
When you enter and leave the room, always say something to her, give her a look around your house, and tell her what things are, sometimes its best not to keep repeating words over and over, but rather say it once. If you take her around the house and show her whats what and where things are, later, ask her where she (what room), or what you are holding. If she doesn't reply, tell her so she knows. If she does reply, try to help her pronounce the word, or correct her if you need to. Just make sure she gets lots of attention, and try having conversations with her, and it may help her learn some!

thank you
That helps alot. I make it a habit when I come into the room to whistle and say, "hello, Scully". She immediately, whistles back and gets all excited and starts to mumble something...but its still not there yet.
There is also something else.....When my wife and I play with her. I may have to get up and answer the phone...Scully immediately stops what she is doing and follows me to the phone and whistles. Totally ignoring my wifes calls to stay and play. Its the funniest thing. I thought I would share that. :D |

Many greys start talking to their handfeeders, so that's entirely possible. However, the greater question is why you'd expect a 3 months old grey parrot to be fully weaned. I'd be really suspect. Make real sure you monitor this baby's weight for the first few weeks. Just because they will take food from a bowl doesn't mean they'll take enough. Get a gram scale and weigh the same time daily at least once a week. There should be NO weight loss.

However.....
I would say the majority of greys are "late talkers" in comparison to other parrots. It does not necessarily have to do with how religious you are about "training" them to talk - it just seems to be the way they are. And of course there are some greys that never talk much at all.
I just don't want you to get your expectations too high hearing about all these early talkers - if your baby is going to talk, he will....you just need to be patient. |

talking
My first grey started talking at 3 months. I couldn't believe it either, because everything I read said about a year. By the time he was 8 months old he was talking quite a bit and whistling songs too. His favorite was Bridge over river Qui (spell?) Have fun!
I think 3 month seems a little early to be fully weaned. I can't remember exactly when he weaned, but it seems like I still gave him his nightly feedings at 16 wks. |

talking
Besides having the grey who started talking at 3 months, I also have a 13 year old grey who hardly ever talks. She occasionally says apple, waffle, or hello. I think physically she has difficulty speaking because often if I have her out talking to her she tries to talk. She moves her mouth and her body moves like the others do when they talk, but nothing comes out. She does however like to whistle some in the evening. Talking isn't everything. She is the sweetest bird I have.. loves to be out with me.. just wants to cuddle all the time... sits with me and takes naps..never bites...she's just plain happy to be near me, so I don't really mind that she doesn't talk.
Enjoy your baby |
