Emergency Room Morning

Hi,
I spent the morning in the emergency room with Ozzie this morning. Last night I got a new manzanita branch, really nice perch for the birds and this morning after Ozzie had her shower, I saw about 20 minutes later that she was bleeding on her breast. I thought it was the new perch, as this was a perch I cut , not purchased. After coming home from the doctor, I realized it was not the perch at all. This happened last night, when the baby gate that I use to keep the dogs out of the room fell on her. My poor baby was like this ALL night and never even cried except when the gate fell initially. She looked ok when I picked her up afterwards, but obviously she wasn't. She now has about 8 stitches in her breast and is wearing a cone on her head. I feel SO bad that she went through the whole night like this. She is on antibiotics and pain medication now. Has to wear the cone for 7-10 days. I am relaying this to you so that if something happens to your birds, PLEASE, make sure they are really ok. Because Ozzie made no complaints, no crying, nothing, she suffered all night. I hope some day she will forgive me.

Jer

Jer:

Thanks for posting. Its tough to have to admit we make mistakes. I do it often, so I fully understand the guilt factor. Unfortunately, birds HAVE to hide their distress. Its what saves them from being on the menu in the wild. And, since greys have a prominent keel bone, you really have to check them carefully when traumatic injuries occur. Another thing I've noticed is that sometimes they have a delayed bleed. I've seen that especially when it comes to toenail clips. Most birds will bleed immediately. I've had my guys go for 10 minutes without a drop of blood and then start bleeding.

I'm certainly glad you took her to the vet and had the problem remedied. Its tough being a dad.

thanks everyone for your support. I think the shower she took the next day started the bleeding again possibly because I didn't see ANY up until then..
That is my husband holding her, Gary, so I could take the picture.
Its SO hard not to love on her at night when our nightly ritual is to cuddle with her laying on me. She can't now even with the cone off. Its to painful for her. This will be a long 10 days.

I'm sure the no cuddling is just as hard on her! I know Bosco loves his snuggle time and demands it often times. We are still thinking of you and you have our best thoughts! Bosco sends a beaky kiss to Ozzie to help her feel a little better! Keep us posted.

That poor baby! I'm so sorry that you had this experience. I do hope that Ozzie has a full and easy recovery from this nightmare. And I also hope you don't beat yourself up too much. Accidents happen. You are very fortunate that you caught this when you did. And though it's hard to wait for the cuddles - I'm sure she will love you even more when this is all over.
