AG and Amazon chew wood

both my birds chew on my wood work like they are a puppy cutting teeth. I have plenty of toys for them in and out of their cage so that isnt the peoblem. The Grey never did it until I brought the Amazon home last night. I guess the amazon has always done it.I tell the grey no and he quits but only for a few minutes. It seems I am always telling my grey no to something these days and I think that is why I cant get near him. How do I stop that short of moving them into the middle of the room???

It's a pain when this happens I know but they are both only doing what any parrot instinctively does.....chew!

It's not something a parrot should be told 'No' for. It's WE who should be told 'No' when we give our birds access to things we don't want chewed.

By bringing these birds into our lives and our homes we are accepting and expecting (or at least we jolly well SHOULD be!) that they will want to behave like 'normal' parrots as far as possible, to be able to chew, play and fly.

Parrots will chew anything they can reach. If there are things within our homes we don't want them to chew then we must make sure our parrots can't get to them. Anything we allow them to reach is fair game and any kind of reprimand for the chewing of these things is not appropriate. They aren't being naughty. They're being parrots.

I try very hard to ensure anything dangerous to my birds or precious to me is not accessible to them. I've still had many, many possessions destroyed though! Camera, phones, mouses (mice??!), remote controls....the list is endless!

Every time though it has been entirely my fault. If I didn't want the items chewed I should have made sure the birds couldn't get to them. Simple as that.

They will also sometimes chew any wood they can get to, door frames, bookcases, chairs, dining table, computer desk. You name it, in my house it's been chewed to some degree!

I could prevent this happening by keeping them confined to their cages and not letting them have the freedom to fly around the downstairs of my house for several hours a day. This is not an option and will never happen. Instead, I just don't buy expensive furniture!

THIS is my tatty, but bird-friendly, dining/computer room (their cages are in the living room next door). The kitchen is through the open doorways and they often fly through and sit up on top of the kitchen door. Obviously they aren't in either room when I'm cooking.

I say 'dining room' but it isn't really that any more because I got rid of the dining table to make room for their rope play area and playstands!
