Smile Is this toy safe to eat?

My TAG loves this hanging toy that he is quickly destroying. It's made of that very hard plastic...not the wiffel ball plastic, but that harder plastic that cracks into brittle pieces. I took it out of his cage because I'm afraid of him digesting those sharp small pieces. It's sold as a bird toy so I'm wondering if it is actually okay for him to be chomping on. I'm new to the AG world so I'm cautious about these new things.

Many thanks, Marie

I'm not sure what kind of plastic you are referring to. However, it's been my experience that parrots do not eat what they chew. They break into small pieces and let it drop to the floor. I can't tell you the number of toys Mackie has destroyed... some toys last awhile, others only a couple of days... they are a mix of stainless steel, wood, resin, plastic, a clear hard plastic that looks like coloured glass... you name it. Some of the components are able to withstand his abuse, others are not... none have been eaten.

Hope this helps....

I personally wouldn't give a toy made from brittle plastic due to the associated risks. There are far better, safer toys out there

If your bird loves to chew then you can't do better than buy some untreated pine, some untanned leather and with the help of a drill and a saw make any number of toys which will keep your bird amused for hours!

If it is the plastic balls I'm thinking of, I would say no. Not because of fear of them eating it, but more for them to get hurt on. I have seen those(if I'm guessing the kind right) crack and birds get their feet stuck in the cracks as well as them getting cut on the plastic when it breaks and leaves a sharp edge. Just because it is sold as a bird toy does not make it bird safe, ask lots of questions of the seller before buying any toys and post here and ask what others think of a toy before you buy it. I'm glad I make all my flocks toys, because I see way too any unsafe toys out there.

I ditched the toy; thank you for your input. I'm happy and relieved to have a place to go to for guidance. This board has been great. Have a nice day everyone..
