Henry...why the hole?

I've had several PMs over the last couple of weeks from people asking me why Henry has a hole on his face!

Rather than keep sending the same PM many times I've decided to just post Henry's story here instead!

Here it is!

Henry is approximately 45 years old and has come from a very loving home. He is a DNA sexed male.

Henry's video clips...

Henry's photos...

HENRY - a set on Flickr

Henry's owners had to take the decision to rehome their birds due to the husband having lung disease (not caused by the birds).

They wanted Henry to go to an especially loving home and he's come to me! He will be very well cared-for and loved here too

Henry had a nasal infection about ten years ago.

He was treated for the infection but was left with the top half of his maxilla missing, partly due to the infection, partly due to Henry not leaving the area alone and constantly digging around in it with his toenails.

If you imagine the maxilla as a hollow structure, which it is, in Henry's case the top and one side of that structure have gone. So he still has the lower part and one side of his maxilla meaning he has no problems eating, climbing etc.

The gaping hole is where the maxilla would normally sit between the nostrils.

If you compare pics of Henry and Mojo closely you can see just what's missing!

Henry

On the left side of Henry's face the maxilla is attached to the nostril but on the right side of his face that part of the maxilla has gone so the nostril just kind of hangs there!

You can see this more clearly in a video clip of Henry.

Here is a lovely video clip of Henry!

Hope that all makes sense. It's really difficult trying to explain it unless Henry is right in front of you and next to a bird with a complete beak!

As you can see, it doesn't hinder him in any way!

He does look just fine to me too. Glad you explained it so no one would ask. I bet you will still get questions. Keep this post bookmarked and give reply with the link to the questions in the future. HMMM that bird is the same age as me.

I missed the announcement that you got the third. Congratulations. He sounds like a wonderful bird and how nice that he found his way to you.

After dealing with Bing's plucking and coming to terms with the fact that it might always be I realize, at the end of the day, I don't care what Bing looks like. He is such a sweet little guy that nothing else matters except that he is happy and healhty. Henry looks to be both and it looks like the other two are accepting him into the flock.

Don't tell Dave and Annie I said this but Greys are the best.

I completely agree! He looks like a little character, and they are just such wonderful animals. Grey's are so amazing that one little flaw can't keep that amazing personality from showing threw.

It will not regrow if it is damaged, as in henry's case because thats where the infection was.

Ya know, I have never once noticed the hole in that picture - now that I see it, how did I miss it!!! Im glad to hear that Henry didn't get that whole in a gruesome sort of way but sad at the same time that the infection did that much damage. I guess it doesnt really matter because it doesnt look like its hindering him any!! Im glad he's fitting in so wonderfully - what a great story!
