Pippy- Question about Henry

Since Henry is a bit different, do you notice your other babies reacting to him any different or are you ever worried they may try to bite him where he had the infection that caused him to be special?

reason I am asking, I have Emma. She too is special abled. Sydney is usually very easy going with her. he will try to preen her..but I dont allow it. Because her neck is exposed, should she recieve one wrong bite, it will kill her so I am over protective.

I have never let Stirling withing a foot of her..and never will.....simply because I dont trust how he would react to her and he is sooooooooo quick.

I was wondering your thoughts being you have two normal and one special abled like myself.

Hi Lisa

When they first met Henry they both growled at him, a proper, full-on Grey growl! This was, I believe, simply because he looks so odd and most probably scared them!

Mojo is absolutely fine with Henry, they will happily share a bowl or perch.

Shinda has his moments with Henry and will do all the posturing....head down, neck arched etc. The most he has ever done is fly over him low. Henry can and will bite Shinda if he gets too close to him and makes Henry feel threatened.

Henry clearly wants to be friends with Shinda as you can tell by his body language in this video.

YouTube - HENRY & SHINDA

This was one of the moments when Shinda decided to assert his authority over the newcomer and I don't interfere unless it becomes too violent....which it never has. I never, ever leave them unattended and I always have a thick towel close to hand in case I ever need to separate them.
If Shinda actually goes to try and bite Henry, Henry always bites first resulting in Shinda flying away. This is good I think because Shinda knows Henry is no wimp!

If Henry has had enough of Shinda he will just fly away to another perching area, up on the ropes, on the sofa, on my computer chair etc.

In the main though, Shinda goes about his business and Henry about his.

If at any time in the future I feel Shinda is getting too rough with Henry then they will have separate out of cage time. I'm at home all afternoon, every afternoon (I work mornings and evenings) so have ample time to do this and they all get plenty of flying/playing/me time!

ouch...henry snapped his beak off huh?

thanks for taking the time to write that out and let me know. Maybe the two male thing is why Shinda is asserting his authority, or trying to.
I think thats what I have going on here between Sydney and Stirling.
The younger Syd, thinks he's tough, where Stirling has the smarts and age to back up his authority.
Sydney takes it to the extreme tho and will acutally attack, so they can never be where they can get to eachother.

Hi Lisa

Poor Henry, yes, he had an accident last week.

Bit too long to type out again but you can read all about it HERE.

My poor little boy, I felt so terribly sorry for him and so helpless. As you can see, he was taken to the vet pretty much straight away and is much better now but I was ever so worried for a couple of days

So now he not only has some of the top of the upper beak missing but alos the end of it! Was impressed with the vet's work though.

I think you're probaly right about it being a male thing between Shinda and Henry although Shinda is always the instigator! They do mainly get along ok though.

wow..poor Fella. i'm glad he's doing better. I always keep handfeeding formula or baby food in the house for that very reason. they wont eat if they break the tip...not for a few days....I'm glad he's doing better, and wish for a speedy recovery....

Thanks Lisa. Henry is much better now and eating as he was before the accident!

He's also wiping his beak on hard surfaces after eating and is clearly no longer in pain.

He did enjoy the baby food I hand-fed him from a spoon for a couple of days though!

It was a horrible incident and one for which I hold myself responsible. The door had never slipped before and I'd used it every day as a perch for Henry to step out of the cage onto as he used it so readily but all it took was once

Update!

As you can see from THESE PICS of Henry playing taken at Mark's house last night (my birds and I stayed there for a few days bird-sitting Mark's birds!), Henry's beak has healed so well that he can now use it to grip really well again.

I'm so pleased for him that it's all turned out so well, thought this was going to cause him real mobility problems losing the length from the top of his beak but he's absolutely fine! Not bad for such an old guy!
